I work at General Electric's Global Exchange Services. The workplace is very friendly and there are not a lot of rules to follow, but of course, there are still office politics. Last year, I was an intern there, and I wore shorts often; probably once a week. A couple people said stuff about my clothes, even though we officially have no dress code. That's just how it is. I told them that when I wasn't getting paid an intern's salary, I'd buy myself a new wardrobe commensurate with the position I was in.
This week, I have exceeded the standard of dress at GXS. This is what business casual is supposed to look like. This is GXS business casual. Personally, I don't think looking like you just came in from the back nine is business casual, but who am I to judge.
On casual Friday, I reverted to the good ol' shorts and a t-shirt look. They (the powers that be) didn't like it and told me (well, they had someone else tell me) that wouldn't be appropriate in business. Now before I read a couple of these articles, I was starting to think this was going to be an appropriate rant. I said to myself, "HEY! The RULES say that I CAN WHERE WHATEVER I WANT! You can't tell ME not to wear shorts!" Now I am thinking, "What am I, some kind of retard?" Sometimes you just have to go along with the BS that people lay out for you. This is something that I have been trying to learn for a good long time now. It'll be a while before it actually sinks in.
